Mandatory vacate orders in New York City

By Will Jarrett

Although New York's eviction moratorium has provided some protection to tenants during the pandemic, many people have still been pushed out of their homes.

The map shows every eviction due to vacate orders in New York City since the pandemic began until December 2020. You can click on each dot to get details about individual households and a link to their building records.

I created this map by scraping New York building records using the Python libraries Selenium and Beautiful Soup. The coordinates were collected using Google’s Geocoding API, the data was cleaned up using RegEx, and everything was turned into a database using pandas. Mapbox was used to produce the map.
